Home Cottage, Chideock

2008

Home Cottage is situated in the charming village of Chideock, 1 mile from the Dorset coast, close to Bridport, Lyme Regis and the Devon border.

Tracing its origins to Roman times and beyond, Chideock grew from a small settlement around the ford where the Roman road crossed the Wynreford river. In 880AD, King Alfred The Great bequeathed the area to his youngest son, and Chideock is noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 as belonging to the king.

In 1380, Sir John de Chideock gained the king’s permission to build a castle as a defence against French raiders. It served well until the Civil War, when it changed hands several times before finally being captured by General Fairfax - the Parliamentary Commander-in-Chief. He ordered the destruction of the castle in 1645, and it is believed that stone from the ruins was subsequently used to build the cottage.
